Senator Leyva has been a loyal champion for equity and justice during her tenure in the State Senate, authoring legislation on education, labor, housing, and health services. She serves as the Chair of the Senate Education Committee and the Senate Democratic Caucus, and used her leadership this term to spearhead SB 363, which successfully ended unfair and discriminatory treatment of American Legion Girls State participants. Sen. Leyva has been a thoughtful coalition builder, and has a track record of approaching complex legislative issues by centering impacted communities and following the lead of stakeholders working on the ground. Notably, Sen. Leyva has worked with community partners to push forward SB 299, which will expand the California Victim Compensation Program to provide compensation for serious bodily injury or death caused by a law enforcement officer’s use of force. While a challenging bill to pass, this legislation remains alive on the Assembly floor due in part to Sen. Leyva’s influence and advocacy.
