David Alvarez, representing a majority Latinx district just south of San Diego, joined the Assembly through a June 2022 special election for an abbreviated and underwhelming first legislative term. After taking office, he wasted no time affirming his moderate values by failing to take a position on bills to require buffer zones between new oil and gas wells and residences, schools, and hospitals, establish reporting standards for annual corporate emissions, and return bail premiums for individuals who have their charges dropped. Alvarez also avoided a position on SB679, which created the Los Angeles County Affordable Housing Solutions Agency to increase housing funding and development, a program that could create a new standard for addressing urban homelessness and the low income housing shortage in the state. Of course, Alvarez’s positions aren’t much of a surprise – his law enforcement, real estate, and big oil donors have an outsize influence on someone who should be accountable to his constituents.
