A Bay Area native, Asm. Matt Haney has been a longtime supporter of social and criminal justice reform, and earns the All-Star badge through collaborative advocacy in the state legislature during his first term. A member of the Legislative Progressive Caucus and Majority Whip, Asm. Haney has been a consistent leader and provided support to a diversity of bills this year, including legislation to improve employment transparency, protect consumers from inflated utility costs, improve child/guardian relationships in the juvenile justice system, and restrict the expansion of oil and gas development. Before joining the Assembly, he served as a San Francisco County Supervisor where he supported efforts to provide housing during the pandemic, reduce the pay gap between workers and CEOs, and protect frontline workers. Asm. Haney has continued to work in support of marginalized populations during his time in the Assembly, formerly serving as Chair of the Select Committee on Fentanyl, Opioid Addiction, and Overdose Prevention, and the California Legislative Renters’ Caucus, and currently serving as Chair of the Committee on Housing and Community Development. In 2024, he authored a bill to protect the positions of janitorial staff during subcontractor transitions, and co-authored ACA 10, which increased electoral power by lowering the vote threshold for local bond measures to pass.
