During his six terms in the State Assembly, Asm. Phil Ting was a consistent author and supporter of progressive legislation. He termed out of the Assembly with a lifetime Courage Score of 98, six years of perfect scores, and a resumé that includes the California Legislative Progressive Caucus, Chair of the Assembly Democratic Caucus, and Chair of the Committee on Budget. In 2024, he voted in favor of 57 bills evaluated for our scorecard across a diversity of issue areas like climate justice, criminal justice, education, and social reform. He authored or co-authored four of those bills, including AB 1780 to prohibit the use of preferential admission standards for legacy and donor applicants in higher education, AB 2178 to require state prisons to maintain and report daily empty bed thresholds, AB 2483 to create legal and administrative standards for mandatory resentencing, and SB 1031 to authorize the Bay Area Metropolitan Transportation Commission to raise and allocate revenue for vital improvements. As a legislator and a leader, Asm. Ting effectively helped to advance meaningful progressive policy during his tenure.
