Represents: Elk Grove and neighboring South Sacramento communities, and the big oil interests of the nearby San Joaquin Valley
Supports: We’re not quite sure. Just like 2023, Asm. Nguyen avoided more bills than she took a position on, recording a startling 30 No Vote Recorded (NVR) on the bills evaluated for this scorecard.
Opposes: Cleaning up idle oil wells in the state
Shameful Vote: In her recent campaigns, Asm. Nguyen has spoken openly about the economic challenge her parents faced when they immigrated to Sacramento as Vietnamese refugees, and the impact their experience had on her interest in pursuing public service. However, she failed to cast a vote on AB 2584, which would prohibit corporations from buying a large volume of single family homes and improve the housing affordability landscape for countless everyday Californians.
What were they thinking?: In 2024, Asm. Nguyen was elevated to serve as Assistant Speaker Pro Tempore of the California Assembly, a big leadership role for someone still managing through her first term in the legislature. And while there were high hopes that she would be up to the challenge of helping to steer a dynamic Democratic caucus, she didn’t pass the test. On over half of the bills evaluated for Courage Score, she didn’t even cast a vote, making it difficult for anyone to take their cues from her legislative movements. It’s hard to take Asm. Nguyen seriously as a committed supporter of progressive policies when she so frequently fails to show conviction when the spotlight is on.
