  • After an eight year streak of dismal Courage Scores, the nicest thing that we can say about Sen. Steve Glazer is that he’s consistent. He’s been particularly consistent in circumstances where he can loudly complain in the press about an issue that could be resolved through legislation, and then taking no legislative action. In 2023, he authored an op-ed for the LA Times lambasting his fellow Democrats for failing to establish program evaluation mechanisms to justify social program funding, and then turned around and voted against AB1604 to increase charter school accountability by placing more reporting requirements on the facility and operations grant funds that they receive each year. He was back at it this year, aggressively criticizing the results of an audit of the Labor Commissioner’s Office that demonstrated failures and delays in their investigations of wage theft claims, and calling the Labor Commissioner a ‘toothless enforcer’ of wage theft laws.’ He finished the episode by publicly refusing to introduce any legislation that might help resolve the issues. A pretty toothless response from someone with the authority to create new policy to help working Californians.
  • In February 2024, Sen. Glazer introduced SB 1287 with the stated intent of improving safety for students on college campuses in the state amid ongoing protests of the Israel-Gaza War. However, the language of the bill required the universities to adopt policies that restricted ‘the time, place, and manner’ of demonstrations, raising serious concerns about the limiting of free speech at educational institutions. His policy process excluded students impacted by the over-policing of protests, introducing questions about whether the policy could be evenly applied to students of different backgrounds across California campuses. While the intention might have been safety, this bill joins a long list of Glazer-authored legislation that missed the mark, potentially building discrimination into the law instead of cooking it out.
